Technical: Non-Ionic; HLB = 16.7; SAP Value = 40-50; pH = 5.5-7
- Also called Tween 20, Emulsifan
- Liquid, cold process, oil in water solubiliser/dispersant
- Can also be used as a wetting agent and stabiliser
- Used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food production
- Generally regarded as mild, non-irritant and safe
- Our polysorbate-20 is PEG free (non-ethoxylated). It does not contain polyethelene-glycol
- Palm free – derived from lauric acid from coconut oil
- Good alternative to hydrogenated castor oil
- When used with anionic surfactants, may cause thinning, decreased foaming and reduce harshness
- Be careful when choosing a preservative – not compatible with sorbic acid, benzoic acid, benzyl alcohol or parabens
- When calculating required quantities, remember that polysorbate has a relative density of 1.1, therefore 100ml weighs 110g
Use:
- Typically 2-7% inclusion.
- Can be used up to 20% but this can result in a sticky feeling on the skin
- As a guide, 3 parts polysorbate to 1 part essential/fragrance oil
- For sprays use 10% polysorbate, 3% fragrance, 87% water. It will create a milky liquid
- Recommended for sprays, toners, bath oils, lotions and liquid soaps & shampoos
