Description

Citronella Essential Oil

General Description: Citronella oil comes from a grass growing up to 2m and originating in India where it is grown for its insect repellent properties as a plant as well as to obtain the oil for use in the perfumery industry. We stock nardus (Ceylon type) rather than winterianus (Java type) which is generally considered better for use in perfumery industry. Citronella essential oil has a medium initial aroma that is sweet and very recognisable. It comes from the same family as lemongrass with which it shares many properties. It has been registered as an insect repellent in the US since 1948 but this is not the case in the EU. Whilst it has been typecast as an insect repellent, citronella oil does have other benefits. Botanical Family: Cardipteridaceae

Commonly associated with: Refreshing, Uplifting, Clearing. Citronella oil is mainly used in the perfumery industry and is a popular fragrance for candles, perfumes, soaps, skin lotions, deodorants. It is commonly and traditionally used in repelling insects but as it is not registered for this in the EU, products cannot make claims based on the inclusion of citronella oil. It is a great deodorising oil which can dispel airborne smells, especially smoke, cooking, pet smells. It is particularly effective when combined with bergamot. Applied topically, its deodorising properties make it useful for pongy feet and shoes! Cats have a natural aversion to the aroma and this can be exploited to deter them from the garden or furniture, whilst dogs find it calming and it can be used for calming barking. In skincare, it is suitable for oily skin types.

• Keep away from the eyes and seek medical advice if undiluted essential oil gets in the eye
• Remember, essential oils are potent and only a little is needed
• We recommend that you read our Basic Guide to Using Essential Oils which you can find in our Information Hub

Responsible Marketing

The Medicines act requires that, as vendors of essential oils, we do not say anything that could be interpreted as a medical claim. This means we cannot suggest that essential oils help, alleviate or cure any disease, disorder or medical condition, even very minor conditions like headaches, colds or congestion. Nor can we inform you of any traditional remedial uses of essential oils.
Scientific research is being carried out into the properties of essential oils but as, like wine, the oils vary from batch to batch, the findings can only be applied to the specific batch tested. This means that in the EU, essential oils cannot be licensed to make remedial claims in relation to a specific disease or adverse condition of the body of mind.

We do want you to be as informed as possible when using our essential oils and therefore would suggest that you do your own research either through an accredited aromatherapy course or using reliable books by industry recognised experts Robert Tisserand, Len Price or Shirley Price. The Aromatherapy Trade Council operate a voluntary code of conduct which we abide by and they are a good source of information. Aromatherapists registered with the IFPA may also be able to offer you advice. Please be wary of information you find on the internet as it is mostly unregulated and often promotes unsafe practices and makes unsubstantiated claims.
